Romney says Paul doesn't represent mainstream (AP)

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa ? An Iowa victory within reach, an increasingly confident Mitt Romney on Friday cast chief GOP presidential rival Ron Paul as a fringe candidate and said: "I'm working harder than anyone to make sure he's not the nominee."

"I don't think Ron Paul represents the mainstream," Romney added, criticism that illustrates an attempt to bloody the Texas congressman who, like Romney, is in strong contention to win Tuesday's lead-off caucuses.

The libertarian-leaning Paul, campaigning on the western side of the state, didn't respond.

Romney commented on Paul's candidacy during morning television interviews after appearing with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie before several hundred people outside a grocery store near Des Moines.

Mindful not to ignore another key state, Romney was dashing to New Hampshire later in the day for more appearances and also rolled out a fresh TV ad there. He returns to Iowa on Saturday afternoon and plans to remain in the state through caucus night. It's an indication of just how confident his team has become about possible victory in a state that derailed his candidacy four years ago.

There's reason for that optimism.

A new NBC-Marist poll shows Romney and Paul virtually tied for the lead among likely caucus-goers, with Rick Santorum surging into third, Rick Perry inching up to fourth and Newt Gingrich sliding to fifth. Michele Bachmann was at the back of the pack. Perhaps more striking, tea party supporters are essentially divided evenly across the Republican field.

The race, to be sure, remains fluid and many Iowans still are undecided.

But Romney was expressing increasing optimism as his rivals scrambled to win over cultural conservatives and religious voters who haven't rallied behind one candidate, possibly paving the way for a victory by the former Massachusetts governor seen by some as less consistent on issues this bloc holds dear.

"I'm not planning on being disappointed," Romney said, speaking about Tuesday's caucuses. "No thing is a sure thing at this stage, but it feels terrific."

He also defended negative ads by his allies that have pounded Gingrich and argued that the former House speaker has done more damage to himself than any ads have.

"Speaker Gingrich's numbers have gone down more in New Hampshire than they have here," Romney said.

Gingrich, meanwhile, showed a little emotion at an event in Des Moines with mothers. Recalling his late mother's struggle with depression and mental illness, Gingrich choked and wiped away tears. He allowed the he does "policy much easier than I do personal."

The moment was reminiscent of Hillary Rodham Clinton's teary-eyed response to a question just before the 2008 Democratic primary in New Hampshire. The episode was credited with humanizing her in the eyes of voters. She won the primary.

Romney also refused anew to commit to releasing his income tax returns, saying: "If I become president, why, then I can decide that."

Illustrating an all-out effort to win the caucuses, Romney implored Iowans in a video to show up at precinct caucuses Tuesday and vote for him.

At the early morning event, he appeared energized by the crowd as he delivered his standard campaign speech focused on President Barack Obama. "He just played his 90th round of golf," Romney said, knocking the president for vacationing in Hawaii as the crowd stood on cold, light rain.

Christie, a Republican backed by the conservative and tea party wings of the GOP, playfully told the crowd to vote for Romney or "I will be back, Jersey style."

With four days to go, public and private polling show Romney and Paul in strong contention to win the caucuses, with coalitions of support cobbled together from across the Republican political spectrum and their get-out-the-vote operations ? beefed up from their failed 2008 bids ? at the ready. They're the only two with the money and the organizations necessary to ensure big turnouts on Tuesday.

Three others ? Santorum, Perry and Gingrich ? will have to rely largely on momentum to carry supporters to the caucuses. Each was working to convince fickle conservatives that he alone would satisfy those who yearn for a nominee who would adhere strictly to GOP orthodoxy.

Bachmann was working to convince backers that her cash-strapped campaign was not in disarray after a top Iowa supporter abandoned her to back Paul.

She appeared Friday with Iowa Rep. Steve King, her closest congressional ally, at a cafe in his district. But he offered only kind words for the congressman and not the endorsement that she and some of her rivals have so eagerly sought.

Large Buy In Fantasy Baseball League - Advice?

In March, Caleb and I will be heading to Las Vegas and drafting a team in the National Fantasy Baseball Championship Main Event. This is a league that has a $1400 buy in, pays out $5600 for winning your division, and can pay out $100k for winning the entire event. I'm looking for advice.

Star-divide

I first learned of this league from this New York Times article about an Idaho pig farmer winning over $300k over the past few years. I've never been to Vegas and so it seemed to me like a good excuse to go.

I'm under no illusion that Caleb and I can win the entire shebang, but I'd like to be competitive in our subdivision. So who does everyone trust for fantasy projections? Historically, I've leaned on the Baseball Prospectus projections, and I'm not sure that's served me well in the past (possibly I'm not using the projections to their fullest capabilities.) I also have a blind spot when it comes to rookies and younger players, getting too caught up in the hype and over drafting them.

So what would be your strategy for a standard 5x5 league like this? Also looking for any books, websites, or magazines anyone would recommend. I'll probably end up buying just about every preview magazine, but it would be nice to hear which ones come highly recommended. Thanks!

Google activates 3.7 million Android devices over Christmas, but Apple still wins (Digital Trends)

android-and-ios-activations-localytics-graph

Not long ago, Google revealed that it is activating 700,000 Android devices per day. Well, Christmas has been kind to Android. Andy Rubin, head of Android, Tweeted that 3.7 million Android devices were activated on Dec. 24-25, meaning a lot of people got new phones for Christmas.?

iOS Christmas activations may be even higher, at least in the US. According to data released by Flurry, which tracks activations through the 140,000 apps that use its analytics service, 6.8 million new iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day alone, meaning that unless iOS and Android posted incredibly small and disproportionate activation numbers on Christmas Eve, iOS likely posted a lot more activations than Android. Even if Google had 80 percent of its Dec. 24-25 activations on Christmas Day, that means that it only activated about 3 million devices, which would then leave 3.8 million for iOS. It?s likely, however, that Apple?s lead is more substantial. Again though, our data is far from complete.?

Localytics reports that growth of combined iPod, iPad, and iPhone activations exceeded Android by a bit, though without actual sales to go by, it?s hard to say if iOS actually out-activated Android or not. In other regions of the world, like Sweden and South Korea (home country of Samsung), Android posted a healthy lead.

Did you get an iPhone or Android device for Christmas? A Kindle Fire counts, you know. What about your friends? It sounds like both companies had a great Christmas to us.?

Nigerian court rejects challenge to Jonathan win (Reuters)

Abuja (Reuters) ? Nigeria's Supreme Court threw out a challenge to President Goodluck Jonathan's victory in April 16 elections, upholding the result and rejecting calls by the main opposition party for a recount in several parts of the country.

Jonathan was declared winner with 59 percent of the vote but his nearest rival, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, who scored 32 percent, refused to accept the outcome.

Buhari's Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) party filed a petition to challenge it in May.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed (AP)

MADALLA, Nigeria ? Women returned to clean the blood from St. Theresa Catholic Church on Monday and one man wept uncontrollably amid its debris as a Nigerian Christian association demanded protection for its churches.

At least 35 people died at St. Theresa and dozens more were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa's most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram.

Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the church's dirt parking lot Monday, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more of their places of worship.

It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million staged such attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties.

In the ensuing chaos, a mortally wounded man had cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. "Father, pray for me. I will not survive," he said.

At least 52 people were wounded in the blast, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community.

"In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace," he said.

The U.N. Security Council condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms" and called for the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors "of these reprehensible acts" to be brought to justice.

The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

"Boko Haram's continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith," said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping.

On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast. Three people died in those assaults.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."

"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

However, others don't remain as sure as the president. The northern state section of the powerful Christian Association of Nigeria issued a statement late Monday night demanding government protection for its churches, warning that "the situation may degenerate to a religious war."

"We shall henceforth in the midst of these provocations and wanton destruction of innocent lives and property be compelled to make our own efforts and arrangements to protect the lives of innocent Christians and peace loving citizens of this country," the statement read.

"We are therefore calling on all Christians to be law abiding but defend themselves whenever the need arises."

Shaheen?s second year as mayor an eventful one

WARNER ROBINS -- Warner Robins Mayor Chuck Shaheen and City Council members openly admitted in December 2010 that their first year together was chaotic. They pledged 2011 would be a fresh start.

But at their first council meeting this year, they argued. Four voted to dismiss longtime City Attorney Jim Elliott, as he sat nearby. Three days later, and after public outcry, councilmen reinstated Elliott.

Despite that rough start, Shaheen has reached the halfway mark of his term with a year that saw progress on major projects and in council relations.

With three new council members taking office in the new year, he and the current councilmen are hoping for even more progress in 2012. Terms for Councilmen Tom Simms Jr., Bob Wilbanks and John Williams end Dec. 31.

?I believe this new council -- we?re going to have a vision of how to move Warner Robins forward to the year 2040,? Shaheen said.

RDA reformation aids LEC project

Shaheen?s year started with a slight change in the way councilmen voted.

In much of 2010, Shaheen?s ideas tended to receive a 4-2 vote, with Councilmen Mike Daley, Daron Lee, Paul Shealy and Wilbanks voting together.

This year, Lee -- who served as mayor pro-tem -- began to cast his vote more often in agreement with Simms and Williams, leaving Shaheen as the deciding vote. Lee recently said he decided to work more cohesively with the mayor.

?Whatever my decision was, whether I was pro or against what the mayor said, that would be behind closed doors,? Lee said. ?But in the public?s eye, even if I didn?t agree, we acted professionally.?

One of the first decisions that showed the tide change was an April vote to reform the Redevelopment Agency board, which oversees most of the city?s major projects. Shaheen argued replacing mayor and council on the board with residents would ?take politics out of business decisions.?

Shaheen cast the deciding vote for the reformation when Daley, then the chairman of the board, Shealy and Wilbanks voted against the measure.

The reformation of the board made way for progress on the Law Enforcement Center, Shaheen said. One of his goals was to move forward on projects that had stalled for years before his term began, including the police headquarters.

The project had been discussed for years. In 2010, City Council settled on the Watson Boulevard and First Street location after considering two others. This year the building was redesigned, the property acquisitions were finalized and most of the needed land has been cleared.

?With this new RDA board under Gary Lee (the RDA executive director), we have taken politics out and put progress in,? Shaheen said, adding ?there?s no way? the project would be as far along if mayor and council were still on the board.

Shealy and Wilbanks recently said the new board has made tremendous strides, but they stand by their original votes. Daley did not mention the RDA in an e-mailed statement for this story.

?The people elected mayor and council, and I think there?s a responsibility there,? Shealy said. ?I think we could?ve represented the people a little better.?

Other projects

Also this year, the Georgia-Robins Aerospace Maintenance Partnership project received its needed finding of No Significant Impact from Air Force Materiel Command.

?G-RAMP had been talked about for 10 years before me,? Shaheen said. ?And we got that done in a year. That?s progress.?

The project is proposed to be a public-private partnership to include maintenance hangars for use by Robins Air Force Base, which local leaders say could bring thousands of jobs to the area.

But where the project goes from here is uncertain. Shaheen announced at a recent state-of-the-city address that he doesn?t think the city ought to be in charge of building the project, mainly because of the multi-million dollar price tag and the needed manpower. He proposed City Council review options to either give the land to Robins Air Force Base or sell it to a developer.

Daley and Shealy have said they agree other options should be considered in the new year now that the environmental assessment has shown the land is viable for the project. Williams also agreed but said it could be a hard sell.

?I just don?t know if a private contractor is going to want to do it,? Williams said.

Wilbanks said Shaheen?s proposals for G-RAMP are yet another example of the mayor going against City Council decisions. The project is a win-win for the city, Wilbanks said.

?Now, all of a sudden, he wants to sell that land to a developer,? the councilman said. ?The situation that we had out there -- we had the land, we build it up, we prepare it and the contractors come in and we benefit (from) the revenues and we benefit (from) the job creations. Why would we give that up??

Another project that progressed this year was a wastewater treatment plant extension. City Council voted this month to seek $28.5 million in bonds to fund the project, which will increase the capacity from 9 million gallons of wastewater per day to 12 million.

The expansion will not only lay the groundwork for future residential growth but also will attract industry, Shaheen said.

After laying new and replacing old sewer lines throughout the city this year, Shealy said, the plant expansion is the next big infrastructure necessity.

?That?s for the future,? he said.

In addition, Shaheen said he pushed to complete road projects earmarked for 2001 and 2006 special purpose local options sales tax funds, including those for Margie Drive, Willie Lee Parkway and North Davis Drive.

Lessons learned

Shaheen said some hard lessons were learned this year, specifically in communication. Both the mayor and councilmen said better communication was at the foundation of the calmer council relations.

For his part, Shaheen said he took advice from some Warner Robins? ?forefathers,? including former council members and interim mayors Henrietta McIntyre and Clifford Holmes.

?When you get new people in, it takes a little while for them to gel,? said Shealy -- who, along with Daley and Lee, joined council at the same time as Shaheen. ?We?re really just regular town folks; you don?t have the seasoned politicians.?

A lack of communication was the reason council blindsided Elliott at its first meeting, Lee said. Elliott was given no prior notice his job was on the line. Though specifics weren?t given regarding the brief termination, councilmen have said the issues they had have been discussed and resolved.

?Once you know better, you do better,? Lee said, adding he later apologized to Elliott. ?There are some things that we probably should have given a second thought.?

Shaheen, city engineers and public works employees also were schooled this year on being environmentally friendly when -- after a months-long investigation -- the Georgia Environmental Protection Division found permitting violations for work done at Bay Gall Creek.

The city was fined $50,000 and placed on a year probation. Shaheen said the investigation revealed some requirements he and city employees were unaware of.

?They were really understanding of where we were going,? Shaheen said of the EPD.

The councilmen agreed Shaheen, a former pharmaceutical salesman who had little political experience before running for mayor in 2009, has learned more about being the city?s leader.

?I think he?s learned a lot. I think he?s matured some,? Wilbanks said. ?I still think he?s going to have a challenge working within the city charter.?

Wilbanks said, as he has several times before, that Shaheen has a habit of ignoring majority votes he does not agree with. Wilbanks pointed to a sports complex that has not been built.

Shaheen has said he would like to see the complex, which previous councils have said would bring softball tournaments to Warner Robins, redesigned and moved from the approved location just northwest of the intersection of Russell Parkway and Ga. 247.

Wilbanks said Shaheen should follow through with the plans City Council approved at least 10 years ago.

Daley also mentioned Shaheen?s ability to follow through with majority votes in an e-mailed statement.

?The mayor has a big job and a huge responsibility,? Daley wrote. ?He is the chief executive officer and is responsible for the efficient administration of all the affairs of the city over which he has jurisdiction. However the M&C (mayor and council) is the governing body of the city of which the mayor is one of the members with the same powers as any one of the other six members and the M&C by majority vote set the direction of the city.?

Looking forward

The councilmen interviewed for this story all agreed Shaheen?s second year was better than the first. However, they said the third will be the best yet because the mayor has learned the ropes and three new councilmen are entering the picture. Simms did not respond to interview requests.

Carolyn Robbins, Mike Brashear and Mike Davis will be sworn in Dec. 29. They are replacing Simms, Wilbanks and Williams, respectively. Much unity is expected of these three, especially since they are replacing two councilmen who generated headlines for quirky and combative behavior. Williams is facing one federal and one Houston County Superior Court indictment, and it?s a rare occasion Wilbanks shies away from an argument.

?It?ll be that much better because you have a little camaraderie? with the new council members, Shealy said.

The three recently were challenged with quashing an argument between Shaheen and Wilbanks over the implementation of a payroll study. Instead of the tension that was present at the final precouncil meeting, the year?s last regular meeting ended with a 7-0 vote in which a compromise had been made.

Council approved a measure that said a payroll adjustment would be made -- as Wilbanks wanted -- but did not lock the city into a specific plan -- as the mayor wanted.

?I saw the incoming council and the ones already in council (who are returning) working hand-in-hand, and it really made me feel good? about being voted out, Williams said. ?We had oil and water on there for two years, and it didn?t mix.?

The continuing councilmen agreed next year should be a new start.

?We learn from the past, which hopefully makes us wiser for the future,? Daley wrote in his statement. ?I have enjoyed working with the mayor and present members of the council this past year and look forward to working with the newly elected members and the present midterm members next year.?

Italian anti-trust body fines Apple for misleading customers on product guarantees

Apple Italia has been fined a total of 900,000 euros for failing to inform its customers that products purchased were already covered by two years of free assistance under national law. It appears that Apple employees encouraged the extra purchase of its own AppleCare plans. With the European court's continued investigation of possible e-book price-fixing and ongoing legal jousting with Samsung unlikely to end any time soon, it looks like Apple will be busy in the courts next year too.

Facebook post saves Utah hostages

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Utah police say a woman used Facebook to get help after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage at a residence for nearly five days.

Salt Lake County Jail documents say the woman posted on Saturday that she and her son would be "dead by morning" if they were not rescued. That prompted a welfare check at the home by Sandy police.

Officers arrested 33-year-old Troy Reed Critchfield and booked him into jail for investigation of aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse, animal cruelty and other charges.

He remained in jail on Monday.

It was not immediately clear whether Critchfield had an attorney.

Police say the woman hid in a closet and used a laptop to post the Facebook message.

Girl's plight deepens Israel debate on zealot Jews (Reuters)

JERUSALEM (Reuters) ? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stepped up pledges to curb Jewish zealotry in Israel on Sunday after an 8-year-old girl complained of being menaced by ultra-Orthodox men who deemed her dress immodest.

While his conservative government insists such incidents are fringe phenomena in the mostly secular country, Netanyahu's repeated announcements on the matter reflected concern about widening religious and political schisms.

"In a Western, liberal democracy, the public realm is open and safe for all, men and women both, and neither harassment nor discrimination have any place there," he told his cabinet in broadcast remarks.

Netanyahu said he had ordered law enforcement authorities to crack down on "whoever spits, whoever lifts a hand (in violence), whoever harasses" and to remove street signs segregating men from women in some ultra-Orthodox districts.

The statement appeared to have been prompted by an expose on Israel's top-rated weekend news about intra-Jewish friction in Beit Shemesh, a town of about 87,000 people near Jerusalem.

Naama Margolese, 8, told Channel Two television she was terrified of walking to her moderate Orthodox school because of passersby who want her "to dress like a Haredi" - the Hebrew term for the ascetic, black-coated Jews who are in "awe" of God.

"I'm afraid I might get hurt or something," the girl said.

Margolese's mother Hadassa, an American immigrant who wore a headscarf and skirt in deference to religious Jewish tradition, said the sidewalk abuse could include spitting, curses like "whores" and "bastards" and calls to "clear out of here."

"If that's what happens now, and they (authorities) don't do anything, what will happen in another few years?" she told Israel's Army Radio on Sunday. "This is a terrorist group."

Returning to Beit Shemesh on Sunday, a Channel Two crew was mobbed by ultra-Orthodox Jews who stoned their car, wounded a reporter and stole equipment, police said. The crew was rescued by police, who said they were questioning suspected assailants.

WIDE MARGIN

Separately, police said they had arrested a Beit Shemesh man for spitting at a woman, and that he could face assault charges.

In the report broadcast on Friday, Channel Two showed a Beit Shemesh street sign instructing women to keep to one side, away from a synagogue. A few ultra-Orthodox men who agreed to be interviewed sought to justify their forcible occlusion of women.

Israeli media have debated the impact of religious gender segregation on public transport and the conscript army, where some pious troops prefer to shun female instructors and singers.

The ultra-Orthodox make up only about 10 percent of Israel's population of 7.7 million. But their high birthrates and bloc voting patterns have helped them secure welfare benefits and wider influence. One of Netanyahu's biggest partners in the coalition government, Shas, is a party run by rabbis.

According to Channel Two, its Beit Shemesh story has generated momentum for a demonstration against ultra-Orthodox coercion in the town, scheduled for Tuesday.

Moshe Abutbol, the Shas mayor of Beit Shemesh put the number of townspeople involved in the abuse at between 20 and 50.

Emulating Israeli commandos who disguise themselves as Arabs for missions in Palestinian areas, the police have officers who work undercover among the ultra-Orthodox. Israeli television showed them raiding a religious protest in Jerusalem on December 17.

Netanyahu has also condemned radical Jews behind a spree of vandalism against Palestinian property and Israeli garrisons in the occupied West Bank, attacks designed to bog down government moves to raze settlements built without a permit.

"Beit Shemesh shocked Netanyahu not because of new facts but because of old facts that were recounted by a lovely little blond-haired girl with blue eyes," said Nahum Barnea, senior commentator for the biggest-selling newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

Did Our Founding Fathers Believe in Free Markets? (The Motley Fool)

It used to be that you only encountered people in colonial-era dress at historical reenactments. These days, though, you're likely to see tri-cornered hats, evoking the nation's Founding Fathers, at political rallies for tea-party favorites such as Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann. These adherents of the Tea Party generally pursue an "anti-tax, limited government" agenda as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently put it.

Paradoxically, some supporters of Occupy Wall Street blithely assure the media that our country's founders never intended the present-day disparity of incomes between rich and poor, or the legal recognition of corporations as people; increased taxation of the very rich and increased regulation of Wall Street and business, some argue, must be introduced to correct these problems.

While it may be politically convenient to invoke our nation's founders to support our arguments today, how much do any of us really understand about the Founding Fathers' thoughts on capitalism, free markets and the economy? For most Americans, however politically engaged, the answer may be: Not a great deal, and not in any detail.

Plundering the past to make debate points?
Putting it matter-of-factly, Alan Pell Crawford, author of Twilight at Monticello: The Final Days of Thomas Jefferson says, "Rightwing politicians and their publicists, like their liberal counterparts, are interested in the past only as repository of pseudo-facts. They plunder the past to make debating points, most of which are unsupportable."

Crawford cites the Founders' views on government regulation as an example. "The evidence seems to suggest that Jefferson and Washington and the men of their time and place had no problem with government regulation of markets," he says.

"County courts in Virginia exercised what conservatives today would consider outrageous power over economic relationships and transactions. They could set the prices innkeepers could charge their customers -- that sort of thing. We might now recognize such powers as unwise or misguided, but Jefferson and Washington seem to have taken it for granted," he adds.

"This isn't to suggest today's conservatives are incorrect in their economics," Crawford concludes, "only that they are incorrect to attribute their views to people who could not possibly have shared them."

The market as innocent until proven guilty
Dr. Hugh Rockoff, a professor of economics at Rutgers University and co-author of History of the American Economy, offers a complementary view: "Madison and Hamilton envisioned a society in which the bulk of economic activity would be carried out in private markets by private individuals trying to get the best returns they could on their labor and capital."

"I think the founders saw this sort of economy both as efficient -- as the best way of generating a large flow of goods and services -- and as a way of protecting other personal liberties from despots," says Rockoff.

While the Founders' ideas largely came from Scottish Enlightenment-era economic thinker Adam Smith, as Rockoff explains, Smith is himself often misunderstood. "Nowadays we tend to think of Smith as a rigid free-market ideologue," he says. "But as anyone who has actually read Smith from cover to cover can tell you, Smith was anything but."

As Rockoff puts it, "Smith believed that the presumption should be that we leave people free to go about their private business as they see fit until experience has shown us that their liberties have to be constrained for the common good. It's a court of law: the market is innocent until proven guilty."

An enlightened, experience-based approach
No matter the ongoing political debate, the Founders' approach to the economy sets a good example for present-day Americans, argues Rockoff.

"We need to think through our policy toward each sector of the economy in the light of experience," he says. "We can't know what the founders would say about current problems, but we can adopt their 'enlightened,' experienced-based approach to trying to solve them."

What is called for, it seems, is less arguing and further study.

Editor ousted over racial slur against Rihanna (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? The editor of a Dutch fashion magazine has been fired after the publication used a racial slur to refer to Barbados-born Rihanna, setting off a social media furor and prompting an outraged response from the singer.

Eva Hoeke, editor of "Jackie," and the magazine's publisher said in a joint statement on Facebook that the misuse of a racial slur ? "although without malicious intentions" ? was cause for Hoeke's departure after eight years on the job.

The slur was used in an article about how to dress your daughter like a pop star. Responding to criticism that flashed across the ocean, Hoeke said at first that her use of the term was meant as a joke.

She then put out a Twitter item with a more explicit apology, saying she learned, "1. Don't publish bad jokes in the magazine 2. Don't pretend bad jokes to be funny. Sorry guys. My bad."

On Tuesday, Rihanna responded herself via Twitter: "Your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!!"

Rather than a positive article useful to Dutch girls, Rihanna said Jackie chose to print an item "degrading to an entire race. That's your contribution to this world!" She also ended her tweet with an indelicate phrase.

Hoeke said she was unaware the word she used was so loaded because "you hear it all the time on radio and TV."

By Wednesday, the Facebook apology had attracted hundreds of comments, many condemning Hoeke but some saying the reaction was overblown.

Climate sensitivity greater than previously believed

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Many of the particles in the atmosphere are produced by the natural world, and it is possible that plants have in recent decades reduced the effects of the greenhouse gases to which human activity has given rise. One consequence of this is that the climate may be more sensitive to emissions caused by human activity than we have previously believed. Scientists at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) have collected new data that may lead to better climate models.

"Emissions by plants to the atmosphere are influenced by climate change -- higher temperatures can increase the rate of the biological processes that control the emissions. If natural emissions increase as the temperature rises, this in turn increases the amount of particles that are formed," says Kent Salo of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg.

The interactions between particles and the climate constitute a very complex web of processes. The particles in the atmosphere consist to a large part of organic substances, which may arise from incomplete combustion in engines or boilers. Such substances may also arise from plant growth. Emissions from plants occur as gases, and are greater than emissions from other sources, in a global perspective.

Once released into the atmosphere, the gases from plants are converted by many chemical processes, such that they can eventually condense and form particles. The particles that are formed in chemical reactions in the atmosphere are known as "secondary organic aerosols" (abbreviated to "SOA"), and consist of a complex mixture of organic substances. The particles age and change with time, and this process influences the effects that the particles have on human health and on the climate.

"Particles in the atmosphere basically have a cooling effect on the Earth, and they affect cloud formation. The greater the number of particles in the air, the greater will be the number of cloud droplets. This affects the lifetime of the clouds and the amounts of precipitation, and consequently, the climate. Today, we do not have a fundamental understanding of how SOA particles are formed and the properties they have, despite them being an important component of, for example, climate models."

Kent Salo has studied organic substances that are known to be components of particles in the atmosphere and how their physical properties can be used in models to understand the complicated systems that the SOAs constitute, and the effect they have on the climate.

In order to study these processes, Kent Salo has developed a special instrument that measures the degree to which the particles evaporate when they are heated. He has carried out experiments at several major research facilities in Europe using this instrument.

Researchers discover new evidence for complex molecules on Pluto's surface

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

The new and highly sensitive Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a strong ultraviolet-wavelength absorber on Pluto's surface, providing new evidence that points to the possibility of complex hydrocarbon and/or nitrile molecules lying on the surface, according to a paper recently published in the Astronomical Journal by researchers from Southwest Research Institute and Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Such chemical species can be produced by the interaction of sunlight or cosmic rays with Pluto's known surface ices, including methane, carbon monoxide and nitrogen.

The project, led by SwRI's Dr. Alan Stern, also included SwRI researchers Dr. John Spencer and Adam Shinn, and Nebraska Wesleyan University researchers Dr. Nathaniel Cunningham and student Mitch Hain.

"This is an exciting finding because complex Plutonian hydrocarbons and other molecules that could be responsible for the ultraviolet spectral features we found with Hubble may, among other things, be responsible for giving Pluto its ruddy color," said Stern.

The team also discovered evidence of changes in Pluto's ultraviolet spectrum compared to Hubble measurements from the 1990s. The changes may be related to differing terrains seen now versus in the 1990s, or to other effects, such as changes in the surface related to a steep increase in the pressure of Pluto's atmosphere during that same time span.

"The discovery we made with Hubble reminds us that even more exciting discoveries about Pluto's composition and surface evolution are likely to be in store when NASA's New Horizons spacecraft arrives at Pluto in 2015," Stern added.

Obama wants payroll tax extended for entire year (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama, rebuffed by Congress on a yearlong extension of a Social Security payroll tax cut, said Saturday that it would be "inexcusable" for lawmakers not to lengthen the short-term deal when they return from their holiday break.

The measure, passed by the Senate shortly before the president spoke briefly at the White House, would extend the tax cut and long-term jobless benefits for just two months ? a partial victory for Obama that also sets the stage for another fight in February.

While pleased by the Senate vote, Obama said "it would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle class tax cut for the rest of the year. It should be a formality, and hopefully it's done with as little drama as possible when they get back in January."

He added, "This really isn't hard. There are plenty of ways to pay for these proposals."

The renewal of the 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for the additional millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more is a modest step forward for Obama's year-end jobs agenda.

As a condition for GOP support of the payroll tax measure, Obama has to accept a provision that forces him to decide within 60 days whether to approve or reject a proposed a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

Obama made no reference to the pipeline in his remarks.

The bill awaits House action next week.

"I'm looking forward to the House moving forward and getting this done when they get back on Monday," Obama said.

Do a Few Chores to Warm Yourself Up Without Touching the Thermostat [Winter]

Do a Few Chores to Warm Yourself Up Without Touching the ThermostatHome-centric blog Re-Nest shares a quick tip for staying warm as winter approaches: instead of turning up the thermostat, get up and move a little bit with the vacuum to keep yourself comfortable.

It isn't the most mind-blowing tip in the world, but if putting on a sweatshirt doesn't really help the temperature of your apartment, try getting up and doing a few chores. Not only will the movement warm you up, but you'll get something done in the meantime:

Last night I found myself cold in my house and needing to tidy up before my mom arrived for a short visit. Rather than bury myself under blankets on the couch, I vacuumed. Within a few minutes, I was warm from lugging my Bissell around and happy to be getting the job done. Similarly, I find that I don't mind handwashing dishes so much in the winter because I enjoy the warm water.

If you really hate doing chores, of course, you could just head to your computer room and play video games?I find sitting at my computer is consistently much warmer than my TV room.

Bears' Hurd facing drug charges (AP)

CHICAGO ? Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was in federal custody Thursday after authorities accused him of trying to set up a drug distribution network in the Chicago area and arrested him after he allegedly agreed to buy a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent.

According to the federal complaint, Hurd was arrested Wednesday night after meeting with the agent at a Chicago restaurant. The complaint contends Hurd told the agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute.

Hurd told the agent "his co-conspirator is in charge of doing the majority of the deals" while he focused on "higher-end deals," the complaint said. He allegedly said he could pay for the kilogram of cocaine after "he gets out of practice," then walked out of the restaurant with the package and was arrested.

The complaint alleges that Hurd also told the agent that he and a co-conspirator already distribute about four kilos of cocaine a week in the Chicago area, but his supplier couldn't keep up with his demands.

He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance later Thursday. It wasn't immediately known whether he had an attorney and his agent, Ian Greengross, did not immediately return a message.

The Bears said the team is aware of Hurd's arrest and is gathering details about what happened.

"We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information," the team said in a statement.

Hurd, a 26-year-old native of San Antonio who played college ball at Northern Illinois, played for five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and is now in his first season with the Bears. He has contributed mostly on special teams, playing in 77 games overall with six starts and two career touchdowns. He has played in 12 games this year, catching eight passes for 109 yards.

The complaint says an informant tipped off authorities in Texas in July, leading to an investigation in which an unidentified acquaintance of Hurd's "negotiated" for approximately five kilograms of cocaine on the player's behalf.

The Bears agreed to a three-year deal with Hurd that was announced on July 29 ? the day after federal authorities say he had agreed to a "consensual interview" with Homeland Security investigators over $88,000 in cash that had been seized in a car he owned in the Dallas area.

Your parents were right: Hard experiences may indeed make you tough. Psychological scientists have found that, while going through many experiences like assault, hurricanes, and bereavement can be psychologically damaging, small amounts of trauma may help people develop resilience.

"Of course, everybody's heard the aphorism, 'Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger,'" says Mark D. Seery of the University at Buffalo. His paper on adversity and resilience appears in the December issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. But in psychology, he says, a lot of ideas that seem like common sense aren't supported by scientific evidence.

Indeed, a lot of solid psychology research shows that having miserable life experiences is bad for you. Serious events, like the death of a child or parent, a natural disaster, being physically attacked, experiencing sexual abuse, or being forcibly separated from your family, can cause psychological problems. In fact, some research has suggested that the best way to go through life is having nothing ever happen to you. But not only is that unrealistic, it's not necessarily healthy, Seery says.

In one study, Seery and his colleagues found that people who experienced many traumatic life events were more distressed in generalbut they also found that people who had experienced no negative life events had similar problems. The people with the best outcomes were those who had experienced some negative events. Another study found that people with chronic back pain were able to get around better if they had experienced some serious adversity, whereas people with either a lot of adversity or none at all were more impaired.

One possibility for this pattern is that people who have been through difficult experiences have had a chance to develop their ability to cope. "The idea is that negative life experiences can toughen people, making them better able to manage subsequent difficulties," Seery says. In addition, people who get through bad events may have tested out their social network, learning how to get help when they need it.

This research isn't telling parents to abuse their kids so they'll grow up to be well-adjusted adults, Seery says. "Negative events have negative effects," he says. "I really look at this as being a silver lining. Just because something bad has happened to someone doesn't mean they're doomed to be damaged from that point on."
